OTAN's Two Popular Academies (TIMAC & OTAC) Accepting Applications Soon
Beginning in July and continuing to September, OTAN's two popular academies will be accepting applications from teacher candidates for 10 spots each for the 2014-15 school year.
The Online Teaching Academy (OTAC) was initiated in 2010 to meet the growing need for professional development to implement online and blended instruction. Participants are also introduced to effective practices in online teaching and learning.
The Technology Integration Mentor Academy (TIMAC) is entering its eleventh year and continues to focus on integrating technology into classroom instruction. Training dates are set for October 16-17 (OTAC) and October 30-31 for (TIMAC), January 22-23 (both), and May 28-29 (both).
WIA Reauthorization Update: Deal reached on new Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA)
Following months of negotiations, a group of eight leaders from both the House of Representatives and the Senate have introduced legislation to improve the nation's workforce development system. The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) modernizes and improves existing federal workforce development programs, helps workers attain skills for 21st century jobs, and fosters the modern workforce that evolving American businesses rely on to compete.
WIOA represents a compromise between the SKILLS Act (H.R. 803), which passed the House of Representatives in March of 2013 with bipartisan support, and the Workforce Investment Act of 2013 (S. 1356), which passed through the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee with a bipartisan vote of 18-3 in July of 2013. Current federal workforce laws were written in 1998 and have been overdue for reauthorization for more than ten years.

Making Skills Everyone's Business - A Call to Transform Adult Learning in the U.S.
In May the Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education (OCTAE) of the U.S. Department of Education sponsored its 2014 National Meeting for Adult Education State Directors in Washington. The day's various sessions dealt mostly with the Department's plans to transform its adult learning work as a result of the PIAAC data. The overall framework was Making Skills Everyone's Business—A Call to Transform Adult Learning in the U.S .
The Importance of Early Learning for College and Career Readiness

ACT is the nonprofit organization responsible for the ACT test —the college admissions and placement test taken by more than 1.6 million high school graduates every year.
In its focus on the effect of readiness on degree completion, ACT has investigated the relationship between readiness and early childhood learning. The results were published in its 2013 study College and Career Readiness: The Importance of Early Learning , which concludes that we as a nation "are far from achieving this goal" of universal readiness.

TELL-IG Raps at Regional

During the recent 2014 Northern Regional Conference, "Collaborating and Learning," held at the Sacramento County Office of Education on April 26, 2014, TELL-IG conducted a rap session at lunch. The notes and links to resources can be found on TELL-IG's wiki .
Participants shared their experiences, favorite resources, and tools, and they asked for the advice of the group regarding technology integration in ESL teaching and learning.

Some of the discussions shared were about Smart classrooms, interactive whiteboards, ESL YouTube channels, online quizzes, and discussion prompt repositories. Also discussed were the use of QR codes, certification for online teaching, and websites with good printable worksheets. Finally, some participants had questions about how to start a project in which they would videotape real-time teacher presentations and include them as video clips in an online course to deliver to an audience different from their classroom learners.
