Using Moodle to Create a Course Web Site

Have you thought about using Moodle to create a Web site for your class, or teach an online class? Moodle is an online course management system where you can post assignments, have an online discussion, and organize documents for your students. You can also create quizzes and track student results. This workshop will introduce you to the Moodle system and offer you the chance to create a site for your class. As part of this workshop, you will receive your own Moodle course site from OTAN. Prerequisites: Basic computer and internet skills.
Beginning PowerPoint 2003 for Adult Education

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn techniques they can use while creating PowerPoint presentations for their classroom or the marketing of their school site. They will learn about: creating and running basic presentations; adding and working with clipart; using design templates; formatting text; and simple animations.
Prerequisites: Participants must be registered members of OTAN prior to the workshop and familiar with computers.
Advanced PowerPoint 2003 for Adult Education

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn about some of the more advanced features of PowerPoint, such as adding sounds, music and video, creating self-timed presentations, and some advanced animation techniques for creating games and other classroom activities.
Prerequisites: Participants must be registered members of OTAN prior to the workshop. Participants must also be familiar with computers and have either attended the Beginning PowerPoint 2003 for Adult Education or familiar with all of the topics in the Beginning workshop.
OTAN offers no-cost, hands-on, three-hour workshops. We will come to your school if you have at least 10 interested participants and an approved lab. If you have a smaller school and need more participants, consider coordinating with other small schools in your area to fill your workshop.

Getting Started with Your Own Wiki Web Site with Barry Bakin

Create your own free website for your class for delivering instruction, displaying student work, student writing practice, or collaborative projects. Learn the basics of editing and managing student access (students do NOT need an email account to access or edit the wiki you create). Share, Review and Collaborate with Online Documents with Melinda Holt

Online Forms - Collecting, Analyzing and Sharing Data with Melinda Holt

Teaching Critical Thinking for the Internet with Branka Marceta

If it is on the Internet, it must be true! Not! How do you know if a Web site is accurate? How do you help your learners think critically about online information? How do you keep your learners safe online? Information literacy is defined as the ability to find, evaluate, and use information. This workshop will give you the tools to locate, organize and evaluate online information, and provide tools for teaching your students to think critically about the information they find online. Participants will identify and practice using appropriate and copyright-safe ways to access, use, and present information from online resources.
Prerequisites: Hi-Speed Internet connection, basic mouse, keyboarding and Internet skills.

PowerPoint Games for Reinforcement and Fun
What can you do during the last week of class besides give tests? Why not have students review for a final exam or reinforce what they have learned all term with a fun, competitive, team-based game? ESL Garden Stories
This site hosts a variety of stories to be used as activities in ESL. Many topics are related to social justice and current events, but there are also some games, folktales, and songs. There are suggestions for using the stories in your curriculum. The author, Dan Spalding, presently teaches ESL at Laney College in Oakland.
Heads Up English
While this author is trying to promote his book, he does have many free mini-lessons and skill builder activities for you to use. Just use the navigation buttons at the bottom of the header for the level you teach and then choose from the menus below to find mini-lessons and skill building activities on various topics. There are grammar, speaking, and listening activities.
LessonWriter helps you create lessons based on any digitally available text. With the click of a button, you can create a list of vocabulary words, a pronunciation lesson, a roots and stems page, a grammar page, and a questions page. There are helpful tutorial videos to help you get started. You will need to set up an account, but at the time we are adding this, the site is free for teacher level use. If you want to be able to share lessons, get reporting functions, or build multimedia lessons, there are costs.
Quizlet allows teachers or students to create flashcards, quizzes, and games to help learn vocabulary. It can be used for individual study or group study. You can create your own or choose from hundreds that are already created by others and categorized to make them easy to browse through.

A work readiness curriculum developed in Florida which includes many of the knowledge and skill requirements of the National Work Readiness Credential. Lessons include the "soft skills" necessary to be effective in the workplace.
Free Webinars on Online Tools for ESL
The Workplace Learning Resource Centers of the Community Colleges is offering a free webinar on Friday, May 21, 2010. The presenter is Marsha Chan, ESL and technology instructor, author and industry expert. Ms. Chan has worked with non-credit as well as credit ESL students, and is currently the secretary of the Technology-Enhanced Language Learning Interest Group of CATESOL. 2010 Census: Encouraging Students to Be Counted
The 2010 Census is critically important to adult educators and their students, as it directly impacts how more than $400 billion will be allocated annually to local, state and tribal governments over the next decade. Online resources, downloadable materials and lessons plans are available to help adult educators promote a "robust response" to the census, while at the same time integrate basic skills and ESL instruction in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Common Core Standards for K-12 (including High School Diploma and ABE programs)
The National Governors Association has released a draft of the proposed national Common Core State Standards for grades K-12. These draft standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts nationwide. The goal of this effort is to begin to provide a clearer, more uniform and more rigorous framework to prepare students for college and the workforce. As they are adopted by states, these will become the universal K12 standards, and will be important for high school diploma classes as well as ABE. Read more . . .
