CA Diabetes Program

Survey on Diabetes Prevention and Adult ESL Teaching
The California Diabetes Program is conducting a brief survey and requesting participation of adult ESL instructors. They are interested in learning what adult ESL instructors are already doing that supports diabetes prevention and what additional resources would be needed to improve these prevention efforts. The survey results will inform the development of a diabetes prevention curriculum and related professional trainings and implementation plans.

Google Apps

Oregon Dept. of Education Saves $1.5M with Google Apps
Oregon is the first state to open up Google Apps Education Edition to all public schools across the state. They estimate savings of $1.5M per year by moving to Google Apps. Google Apps includes Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Video, and Google Sites for building easy Web sites. Watch a video about another district that adopted Google Apps.

Distance Learning

Distance Learning Expands in UC System
The Chronicle of Higher Education reports that the UC system is planning to expand online courses for undergraduates. A pilot project will create online versions of approximately 25 entry-level courses like Freshman Composition, Chemistry and Statistics.


Maryland's Montgomery County Schools Track College Grad Rates
A study reports that students who took and passed Algebra I in the eighth grade were more than twice as likely to receive a bachelor’s degree than those who didn’t have early algebra exposure — 75 percent for eighth-grade math students vs. 34 percent for those who didn’t take math. Adult Learning and Goal Setting
Understanding the Adult Learner, Session 1: Adult Learning and Development is the subject of a summer online course from the California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project. Participants log in at convenient times to complete the weekly activities and to interact with a subject-area facilitator and colleagues via written discussion forums. Enrollment is limited and is on a first-registered, first-served basis. For registration and additional details, visit the Adult Ed Training calendar.

CALPRO's self-directed online course, Learner Goal Setting in Adult Education Programs, allows adult educators even greater flexibility: participants work independently of each other, without a facilitator, and choose to complete as much or as little of the online course when they want. Complete CASAS Training and Generate Certificate Online
Participants who successfully complete CASAS trainings or workshops (on-site or Web-delivered) can now self-generate their Certificates of Completion. First go to the California Portal for Training Forms, select your course (you may be required to login at this point), follow the "Jump to …" menu to complete and submit Training Evaluation and Training Verification forms and lastly — create, review and generate your Certificate of Completion. For assistance, contact CASAS or call CASAS Tech Support at 800.255.1036 X4.


Break New Ground in Computer-Based Assessment
CASAS invites agencies to field-test a new computer-delivered, standardized low literacy assessment to measure the basic literacy and aural English language skills of adult ESL learners with low literacy in their primary language and in English. This is an important opportunity for staff to preview and provide input on this ground-breaking, computer-based ESL assessment.  Participating agencies must:

  • Serve English language learners who have no or limited literacy in their native language or in English 
  • Be willing to test at some point between now and December 2010
  • Have access to windows-based computer(s) and touch screen(s).
